PayPal Express Checkout

PayPal Express Checkout is a global payment gateway, in use by millions of businesses around the world.

It allows online stores to accept payment either with a credit or debit card (used by the customer) or by a customer logging into their PayPal account and making payment (either with a stored credit/debit card or via Direct Debit or bank transfer).

When you enable PayPal Express Checkout on your store, at the bottom of the basket page and checkout form, the customer will be shown a 'Pay by PayPal' button.

When clicked, the user will be able to make payment by logging into their PayPal account, as shown in the example below.

Payment for the order is then transferred into your PayPal account (minus PayPal's fees) and will be available for you to withdraw into your own bank account immediately (subject to any security checks PayPal may make).

Do you have a PayPal account?

If you don't already have a PayPal account, you can create one free of charge within about 5 minutes. Click 'checkout' from the left menu of your account and then 'payment gateway' and click the 'connect with PayPal' button. You'll then be taken through to the application process.

The starting processing charge is 2.59% + $0.49 per transaction (so on a $10 purchase you'll pay $0.75 in charges). But if you process more than $1500 per month in transactions, you'll get a discount on those fees.

PayPal advantages

Some of the advantages of accepting payment by PayPal are:

• It's quick and easy for you (the merchant) to setup
• Most people are familiar with PayPal and feel secure when paying you through PayPal
• There's no monthly fee
• Customers can use PayPal both from your website's shopping basket and checkout page
• Users can store their PayPal account as a payment method, enabling faster checkout when they return

Should you use PayPal to accept payments?

This is a common question. Our answer is almost always 'yes'.

PayPal is the preferred method for a lot of our customers. If you're just starting out then PayPal is an immediate solution to help you to start accepting card payments and you can open an account in a couple of minutes. You'll find that a lot of your customers will prefer paying you through PayPal because of the protection that it offers them (as a customer).

You may prefer to use PayPal Powered by Braintree. This will also activate PayPal Express Checkout on your website's checkout.
